Black and white has a way of feeling both classic and fresh, and I wanted to capture that feeling in cloth. This black and white floral rag quilt lap throw was pieced and quilted in my studio as a versatile, go-anywhere accent for your home.

On the front, I combined a variety of floral and botanical prints in crisp black and white, letting each square have its own personality while still belonging to the whole. The back is a smooth, solid white, so you can flip the quilt whenever you want a quieter look. Between the layers, light batting adds just enough warmth without feeling heavy.

Each block is quilted individually, then the seams are clipped and washed so they soften into the familiar rag-quilt texture-full of depth, fray, and farmhouse charm. The finished size is approximately 37½ inches wide by 63 inches long, which makes it a generous lap quilt for a reading chair, recliner, or wheelchair, and a lovely throw draped over the end of a bed.

You will receive the completed quilt shown in the photographs, sewn and finished by my hands from cotton fabrics, batting, and sturdy thread. To care for it, machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low. Expect some lint and softening of the exposed seams over the first few washes-that blooming texture is part of what makes rag quilts feel so inviting.
